Die Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung ist Teil der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft und erforscht seit über 200 Jahren weltweit das „System Erde“ – in der Vergangenheit, der Gegenwart und mit Prognosen für die Zukunft.

Unser in Wilhelmshaven angesiedeltes Institut Senckenberg am Meer ist in die beiden Abteilungen Meeresforschung und Deutsches Zentrum für Marine Biodiversitätsforschung (DZMB) untergliedert. Als Teil des DZMB widmet sich der Forschungsstandort Hamburg der Taxonomie und Systematisierung mariner Lebensformen.

Die Arbeitsgruppe Benthische Biogeographie ist über eine Kooperationsprofessur mit der Universität in Hamburg verbunden. Das Arbeiten in der Hansestadt Hamburg ist vom universitären Umfeld geprägt und bietet individuelle Entfaltungsmöglichkeiten.

Im Rahmen des ALONGate Projektes (A Long-term Observatory of the North Atlatic Gateway to the Arctic Ocean) arbeitet die Arbeitsgruppe mit Greenpeace zusammen und hat im Rahmen von Forschungstätigkeiten und Auswertung der „Deep Arctic Expedition“ eine Stelle in der Datenauswertung zu besetzen.

 

 

Ihre Aufgaben

• Nachbereitung der Deep Arctic Expedition unter Einbeziehung von Daten aus Referenzprojekten wie ALONGate und IceDivA einschließlich Probenmanagement sowie Pflege, Aufbereitung und Qualitätssicherung wissenschaftlicher Datenbanken
• Analyse und Auswertung biologischer Proben aus der arktischen Tiefsee sowie Durchführung taxonomischer Arbeiten (u.a. integrative Taxonomie, Artbeschreibungen und taxonomische Revisionen)
• Biodiversitätsanalysen sowie Modellierung ökologischer Fragesellungen auf Basis komplexer Datensätze
• Auswertung von Bild- und Videodateien aus Einsätzen von Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV)
• Federführende Veröffentlichung wissenschaftlicher Forschungsdaten sowie Koordination entsprechender Aktivitäten mit internationalen Forschungspartner*innen
• Veröffentlichung wissenschaftlicher Ergebnisse in Fachzeitschriften sowie Präsentation der Forschung auf nationalen und internationalen Konferenzen
• Mitwirkung an der Wissenschaftskommunikation und dem Transfer aktueller Forschungsergebnisse

Ihr Profil

Sie begeistern sich für marine Biodiversitätsforschung und möchten Ihre wissenschaftliche Expertise in einem internationalen Forschungsumfeld weiterentwickeln.

• Abgeschlossenes wissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium (Master) Im Bereich Biologie mit Schwerpunkt Biodiversität, Taxonomie, Ökologie oder Evolution
• Fundierte taxonomische Kenntnisse relevanter Crustaceen des Tiefseebenthos sowie Erfahrung in der integrativen Taxonomie und Artbeschreibung
• Sehr gute Kenntnisse in der wissenschaftlichen Datenanalyse und Programmierung, insbesondere mit Python und R
• Erfahrung im Umgang mit Datenbanken (z. B. Microsoft Access, SQL) sowie mit der Auswertung wissenschaftlicher Bild- und Videodaten
• Erfahrung mit modernen molekularbiologischen und analytischen Labormethoden (z. B. PCR, Sequenzierung, CLSM, Massenspektrometrie oder immunologische Verfahren)
• Kenntnisse multivariater, phylogenetischer und netzwerkbasierter Analyseverfahren sowie moderner Datenvisualisierung (z. B. Shiny oder D3.js)
• Erfahrung in internationalen Forschungsprojekten oder vergleichbaren wissenschaftlichen Kooperationen
• Idealerweise praktische Erfahrung bei Forschungsexpeditionen, vorzugsweise im marinen oder polaren Umfeld, einschließlich Probenahme mit ROV-Systemen

Wünschenswert sind

• Erste Erfahrungen in der universitären Lehre oder Betreuung von Studierenden
• Führerschein der Klasse C 1 (ehemals bis 7,5 t)
• Erfahrungen in der Einwerbung oder Bearbeitung wissenschaftlicher Drittmittelprojekte

The Junior Research Group Digital Collectomics deals with the development of automated methods revolving around the extraction of information from collections, with a strong focus on herbaria, as well as the digitization process and public display thereof.

We leverage the latest developments in computer vision and AI research to create broadly applicable methods that can deal with small to no available training data. Therefore, our research focuses primarily on foundation models, few- and zero-shot methods and domain generalization. In interdisciplinary cooperation with the local Herbarium Haussknecht and other partners all over Senckenberg, we create cutting-edge approaches for publication in high-ranked computer vision, machine learning and interdisciplinary venues with the ambition to convert the novel methods into directly applicable tools usable in collection-based research at Senckenberg and beyond.

The selected candidate will research novel methods in the areas of foundation models, few- and zero-shot methods and domain generalization in established team projects and novel projects in order to advance collection-based research.

Your tasks

• Work in (team) projects by contributing, co-developing, executing, implementing and evaluating ideas for novel AI-driven image and data analysis approaches for collection data
• Establishment of own projects, research questions and approaches for image and data analysis of collection data with focus on broadly applicable methods able to deal with little available data (e.g., zero-shot, few-shot or weakly supervised approaches and foundation models)
• Publication and presentation of research results in high-ranked machine learning, computer vision and interdisciplinary venues
• Curation and archiving of datasets
• Keeping up with current developments in computer vision and machine learning research
• Support of funding acquisition and establishment of the new group at Senckenberg, including participation in outreach events
• Advising of colleagues and students, including supervision of bachelor’s and master’s theses

Your profile

• A doctoral degree (or in the stage of its finalization) in Computer Science or a related subject with a focus on computer vision and/or deep learning, ideally with interdisciplinary experience, or a doctoral degree (or in the stage of its finalization) in Biology with strong computer vision and deep learning background (application or research)

• Development of deployable ML-applications based on methods developed in the group for demo purposes and end-users
• Co-development, extension and curation of joint codebases
• Development of automated workflows for the digitization process and the integration of digitized data in established databases
• Curation and archiving of collection-based image- and text-datasets
• Communication with related Senckenberg groups for integrating our work in the Senckenberg environment
• Support of the group in outreach events
• Supporting administration and maintenance of the institute’s server infrastructure

Your profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related disciplines
• Experience with
• The implementation of machine learning/deep learning, ideally computer vision approaches and pipelines
• Large Language Models and APIs
• Current technologies, languages and frameworks for the development and deployment of ML methods (e.g., Linux, Bash, Python, Numpy, Pandas, Pytorch, Gradio, HTML, CSS, Javascript)

Die Synthesis & Solutions Labs (S&S Labs) sind eine in Kooperation mit dem Institut für Sozial-Ökologische Forschung (ISOE) etablierte Plattform der Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung. In zeitlich und thematisch begrenzten Labs bereiten Forschende und gesellschaftliche Akteur*innen gemeinsam vorhandenes Wissen zur Förderung der Biodiversität auf, und entwickeln daraus nachhaltige und sozial gerechte Handlungsoptionen.

Mit dem am Senckenberg Institut für Pflanzenvielfalt Jena angesiedelte S&S Lab HerbaTour wird das Ziel verfolgt, gemeinsam mit Bürgerwissenschaftler*innen durch Geschichte und Geschichten zu historischen Herbarbelegen das Herbarium Haussknecht mit seinen mehr als 3,6 Mio. Pflanzenbelegen in ein aktives, offenes Archiv zu überführen und den Blick auf Natur und die Biodiversität zu öffnen.

The project:

With roughly 22.5 million natural history collection objects, state-of-the-art research infrastructures, and a globally connected team, we make a significant contribution to documenting and understanding geobiodiversity. To enable a technology-driven approach of digital transformation of our collections, we are establishing a new infrastructure unit as part of a to be established the Collection Data Center. This unit will serve as the central hub for automated and interoperable digital workflows across our scientific collections, integrating metadata generation, data standardisation, and image-based digitization. We are looking for an individual who thrives at the interface of imaging technology, interdisciplinary research and organizational development, or is eager to grow into such a role.

Your responsibilities

In this key position within a dynamic transformation process, you will be responsible for:

• Leading and developing a growing team (initially with one staff member) on image technologies and innovation of the Senckenberg natural science collections

• Develop, implement, and further introduce imaging technologies (e.g., high-throughput imaging, 2D/3D imaging, multispectral approaches) for scientific collections

• Support and contribute to software-based and programmatic solutions for digitization, including scripting, automation, and tool integration

• Designing, implementing and continuously optimizing scalable digitization workflows for the collection digitization processes, including technical, organizational, and scientific requirements

• Establishing and maintaining a quality assurance framework for image data and associated metadata (e.g., technical standards, validation procedures, performance)

• Close collaboration with the Senckenberg Data and Modelling Centre (SDMC), collection curators as well as internal and external stakeholders

• Active monitoring and evaluating technologies, tools and market developments (literature, conferences, networks)

Your profile

• Completed university degree (Master’s or Diploma, PhD or equivalent), e.g., in Computer science or Informatics, Computational Biology, Geoscience, Multimedia technologies and digital systems

This project will focus on improving our understanding and protection of multispecies genetic diversity patterns through macrogenetic synthesis (see Leigh et al., 2021 NRG) and population genetic simulations.

Islands are nature’s natural laboratories and have long been used to fuel and test evolutionary thought. In this postdoctoral project you will synthesize population-level data from islands to characterize genetic diversity’s relationship with geological, climatic, and biotic variables. You will explore if relationships on islands are consistent or opposed to those found at a global scale, generating essential information for island nations interested in biodiversity protection and management. This information will parameterize realistic simulations that explore the broader impact of the severe genetic erosion occurring on islands (e.g. Leigh et al., 2019) to gain insight into system stability.

We seek a candidate interested in moving fluidly between big-picture questions and practical implementation. We are particularly interested in candidates who combine deep scientific curiosity with a motivation to translate ideas into real-world impact. You will work in the Genomic Biomonitoring Lab at Senckenberg (Prof. Dr. Deborah Leigh; Frankfurt, Germany) and have the chance to work within an established network of international collaborators, offering a great opportunity to grow as a scientist. The working language of the lab is English.

About the Project This PhD position is part of a DFG-funded project which aims to clarify the classification of Neotropical net-winged beetles (Coleoptera: Lycidae) affected by paedomorphosis – a syndrome where adult individuals retain juvenile traits.

Using a large-scale phylogenomic approach combined with integrative morphological investigations, the project seeks to identify diagnostic traits that distinguish these lineages. We aim to determine the timing of their divergence and explore the evolutionary drivers behind their convergent morphologies within the framework of a biogeographical model.

The research associate will have the opportunity to work towards a PhD through the University of Potsdam, while being based at the Senckenberg German Entomological Institute (SDEI) in Müncheberg. The successful candidate will engage in diverse scientific activities spanning fieldwork, phylogenomics, museum-based research, biogeographic analyses, and bioinformatics.

Your tasks

• Plan and conduct field expeditions in the West Indies, including insect specimen collection using specialized tools and techniques (nets, Malaise, FIT, and light traps, sifting, etc.), and managing field logistics (travel planning, booking flights and hotels, renting cars).
• Perform morphological and molecular laboratory work on beetle specimens, as well as execute bioinformatic, phylogenomic, and biogeographic analyses
• Manage, curate, document, and analyse complex scientific datasets (e.g., genomic alignments) through the development and implementation of custom scripts and bioinformatics pipelines.
• Prepare and publish scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at national and at international conferences
• Collaborate closely with project partners on research objectives and joint publications

Your profile

• Completed Master’s degree in systematics, entomology, evolutionary biology, or a closely related field, coupled with a strong interest in insect evolution
• Excellent knowledge of insect evolution, phylogenetics, and/or beetle systematics, capable of identifying all major insect orders and common families
• The physical capability and willingness to conduct extensive fieldwork in the tropics, alongside general availability to travel internationally for museum visits, project collaborations, and conferences for up to four consecutive weeks, with an expected frequency of three to four times per year
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
• Strong communication and scientific writing skills in English

Desireable skills

• Experience with imaging systems such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), micro-computed tomography (microCT), and macrophotography, as well as the editing and processing of these generated images
