A biodiverse habitat or an environmental scourge triggered by the climate crisis? This special exhibition explores the two sides of the fascinating brown algae Sargassum. Since 2011, vast mats of algae have been drifting in the Atlantic and washing up on the coasts of the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Sea turtles are dying, coral reefs are dying, and people are reporting health problems. Yet Sargassum also provides a unique habitat with high biodiversity. The film “Beyond Sargassum,” original seaweed specimens, and numerous examples of its diverse inhabitants bring this tension to life.
