There are various ideas and approaches for a sustainable future, but one thing is certain: in light of climate change and species extinction, innovative approaches are needed if the world is to remain a livable place. The exhibition provides insight into the issue and highlights potential solutions. Part of a sustainable future is the transition from fossil fuels to renewable, bio-based raw materials. This economic model—the bioeconomy—relies on plants, animals, and biotechnological processes to conserve resources. Its opportunities and risks are the focus of the exhibition.
Three possible futures for a world that largely does without fossil fuels are presented. The content was developed as part of the BMBF-funded BioKompass project in collaboration with young people and representatives from business, science, and civil society. Students from Frankfurt’s Helmholtzschule also contributed: They identified the issues they considered most urgent, fleshed out their ideas during a multi-day workshop, and developed educational approaches that were incorporated into the overall concept.
The exhibition takes you through a fictional day in the year 2040, showcasing a wide variety of sustainable ideas. It explores the question of what we already use in the morning—and thus the issue of sustainable consumption. What will we be eating for lunch in 20 years, and what impact will food and agriculture have on our environment? Another section, on display since spring 2020, addresses these questions—and the exhibition continues to grow! Since March 2021, the final station focusing on the evening of 2040 has also been on view—here, the theme is “Energy and Mobility.” We look forward to your participation: For example, submit climate-friendly recipes or vote on which topics are important to you for a sustainable future!
